It's a sampling-based technology, and a large group of tests (from the same blood sample) will create traditional "bell shaped curves" around the true values (which, in testing, are assumed to be the values found by a YSI- which has a similar error in measurements, but the YSI curve is extremely sharp. The reality is a bit more complicated, and here it is:ĪLL meters will be more than 20% off once in a while. No, it's a very "sloppy number", widely used by 800-number support centers to get people of the phone quickly. Why do we put up with this? At the very least, nunmbers should be consistent within the same meter. And further, is this 20% difference between readings on the same meter, or the difference compared to a controlled medical device? Or is it the difference between home meters? I do know that numbers can vary with a home blood pressure meter within a few minutes of each test, but I wouldn't think that blood sugar levels should vary that much in one or two minutes.

For sure the glucose meter companies don't tell you this. However, I'm really curious as to where I can find the source for the information on the 20% differentiation. That would fall within the 20% under or over variation percentage. my reading was 100 and at 4:27 my readinhg was 99.

Since my usual reading is 100 or under, I was a bit taken aback and decided to re-test (I don't do this often-test strips are too expensive).
